MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Dear Tennyson Ward Residents

We have some amazing, talented young people in Tennyson Ward in all fields of endeavour but a big shout out to Kaitlyn Torpey for her call up to the Matildas, Australia’s national soccer team. Kaitlyn grew up locally, playing for Olympic FC at Yeronga and will now be representing our country against Uzbekistan in the next Olympic qualifying tournament on 28 February in Melbourne. Congratulations Kaitlyn!

I’m so excited to be undertaking Council’s active school travel programme with two schools this year, Sherwood State School and St Aidan’s Junior School. We have a great range of activities planned to help reduce congestion around the schools in Sherwood and Corinda, encourage students to use public transport and actively travel to school, teach good road safety practices, and reduce carbon emissions. Well done to Yeronga SS parents who are working on improving bike safety and active travel around Yeronga too.

The Brisbane City Council election is coming up on Saturday, 16 March. If you need to pre-poll, early voting starts on 4 March and is in a very practical and accessible location this year.

Gate 1, 167 Hyde Rd Yeronga, next to the horse paddock. There’s good accessible parking on-site.

Mon - Fri 4 - 8 March, 9am to 5pm

Mon - Fri 11 - 15 March 9am - 5pm (6pm finish on 15 March).

Early voting is also available at City Hall during these times if you are working or shopping in town.

As always there are a great range of Council and community events coming up around Tennyson Ward including the annual Yeronga Movie in the Park on Saturday, 2 March at Yeronga Memorial Park. The seriously funny and quirky, family film, Hunt for the Wilderpeople will start at 7pm. The Mango Jam Big Band will be playing from 5.30pm and there’s a Lions BBQ, food trucks and snacks from the Girl Guides available. I hope to see you there.

Regards, Nicole.

PARKS UPDATE

Sherwood Arboretum

Works are underway on the Sherwood Arboretum innovative nature play area under the big fig at the to replace the existing flying fox and play equipment that has seen better days. Work includes new pathways, new decking, new play furniture and new botanical themed play pods with sensory and interactive features for all abilities. A big thank you to the Sherwood State School children who participated in the design process.

The new nature play area is part of a series of recreational and environmental upgrades at the Sherwood Arboretum in the lead up to it's centenary in March 2025.  Several projects have already been delivered, including more than 100 bird/wildlife nesting boxes, seven turtle nesting habitats, major native tree plantings days, new footpaths and signage.

Coming Soon - Gordon Thomson Park, Chelmer

Works on the new ninja warrior playground at Gordon Thomson Park, Chelmer are scheduled to start in March. Works are scheduled for completion by the end of April, weather permitting.

EPETITION: BIKE SAFETY IN YERONGA

Despite a lack of safe bike infrastructure on the Cardross St bridge at Fairfield Rd, Yeronga  Council is refusing to install minor changes to improve this busy intersection. There are no bike lanes, no bike boxes and a very narrow 1m wide footpath with poorly located green walk buttons that put cyclists at risk from being hit by a car. In addition, BUG South users report the thermal road hotspot at the traffic lights is not triggered by cyclists.

Sign the ePetition calling on Council to:

  1. Install a bike box on Cardross St to provide a safe on-road lane for bikes turning into Fairfield Rd;
  2. Relocate the green walk button for crossing across Fairfield Rd to a more suitable location, preferably on the same pole as the Cardross St green walk button; and
  3. Widen the footpath to provide additional off-road cycling and pedestrian space.

YERONGA INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENTS

Planning and design is underway for a pedestrian safety upgrade on Kadumba St near Kingsley Parade, Yeronga. The project includes two new pedestrian refuges and additional road safety line markings to improve safety, accessibility and sightlines for pedestrians and road users. The below plan will be circulated to nearby residents in the coming weeks for feedback.
