MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone

With the Council election done and dusted for another four years, I am so grateful for your ongoing support. There certainly were some unusual challenges and significant delays at some of the booths under the ECQ’s election management. Thank you for your patience and support for the local school, church and community groups raising funds to help others.

I love standing up for this community and I am honoured to have been re-elected as your local Councillor. My margin has increased slightly to 76% and, for those interested in such things, that’s the highest margin in the city. Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner, and his ‘team’ have retained their whopping majority at Council and in my view this is not good for our city. The opposition retained the same number of Councillors. There will be two ‘kermit coloured’ Councillors in the chamber this term.

Apologies for the odd wording. Council rules prohibit me from mentioning political words such as party names or colours and even the word “independent” cannot be used in a political context.

I feel very strongly that while Brisbane is a big city, we are a thriving, resilient, diverse and creative community first here in Tennyson Ward.

I look forward to working with you over the next four years to continue building and strengthening our community and putting people before politics.

Regards, Nicole.

Ps...I hope to see you at one of the ANZAC Day services next week. Check out all the details below.

PARKS UPDATE

Cawonga Park, Oxley Park Upgrade

Work will commence next week on the upgrade to the Cawonga Park, Oxley. Oxley residents will recall that I undertook a public artwork project in Cawonga Park two years ago which still looks fantastic today. As part of that project, requests for additional picnic facilities were raised by residents as Cawonga Park is popular both during the week for local workers and as a destination for local families on the weekend. As a result, I've used the Tennyson Ward Suburban Enhancement Funds to add additional picnic facilities. Works commence on Monday and will include:

  • installation of a new shelter with picnic setting;
  • a new electric BBQ; and
  • footpaths connecting to the new shelter and existing shelter for all abilities access.

Works are scheduled for completion by late May, weather permitting.

Sun Safe Suburban Playgrounds

Works to install shade sails over the playground in Tom O'Neill Park, Oxley are due for completion by the end of April as part of Council's Sun Safe Suburban Playgrounds programme.

Shade sails are also on the way for the playgrounds in Jacaranda Park, Yeronga and Hives Park, Sherwood with installation works scheduled to take place during May, weather and site conditions permitting.

This follows installation of shade sails at Nixon Park, OxleyEd Kuepper Park, Oxley and Robinson Park, Fairfield.

FAIRFIELD ZEBRA CROSSING UPDATE

Great news! The new zebra crossing has finally been installed at Mildmay St, Fairfield between Fairfield station and Fairfield Gardens Shopping Centre.

This new zebra crossing is just one of the important new pedestrian safety upgrades I've been fighting for as your local Councillor. We still need more pedestrian crossing points on Fairfield Rd, Noble St, Home St and Venner Rd and I will continue to advocate for these projects during this term.

Zero Emissions 4075 Group

Zero Emissions 4075 was formed recently with a view to achieving the goals of zero emissions and energy self-sufficiency in our area.  That is, postcode 4075 plus all of Chelmer, the western side of Tennyson Ward.

Our initial focus will be the installation of roof-top solar as this can significantly reduce power bills.  This works for all of us, keeping the money local.  Typically this is spent in local businesses, increasing local employment.

Our team of volunteers is growing, and we are looking for people experienced in marketing, communication and social media to join us.  We have a pipeline of projects to develop in 2024 and we need to get the message out to our community.

We meet at Westside HQ, 3 Clewley Street, Corinda, generally on a Thursday evening.

Do you want to be a part of this exciting initiative?  If so, please RSVP to zeroemissions4075@gmail.com.

Chelmer Speakers Public Speaking Club

With a warm and inclusive atmosphere, Chelmer Speakers provides a supportive platform where members can practice their public speaking skills, receive constructive feedback, and develop confidence in their communication.

Chelmer Speakers is a Toastmasters affiliated public speaking club dedicated to developing public speaking, communication, and leadership skills among its members.

The concern of public speaking grips countless individuals, turning the spotlight into an intimidating challenge. However, with the right support— mentorship, feedback, and a dash of encouragement—this fear can be transformed into a thrilling opportunity for growth.

Each session allows members to engage in a variety of public speaking roles, with a focus on fostering leadership and meeting organisation abilities. Within this empowering community, each member can fulfil their potential and continuously learn through their very own public speaking journey. Come along and see for yourself!

SAM SIGNS GET RESULTS

Venner Rd, Annerley is posted as 60km/h. The sign collected data for a 17 week period from 8 May to 9 September, 2023. During this time 373,699 vehicles (av. 2,989 per day) passed through the portable speed sign zone.

9,663 or 2.6% of all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted speed limit. Of the vehicles speeding, 85% were travelling at or below 66km/h. When prompted, speeding drivers reduced their speeds by an average of 3km to 63km/h within the speed camera range.

Clara St, Corinda is posted as 50km/h. The sign collected data for a 15 week period from 26 May to 9 September, 2023. During this time 383,475 vehicles (av. 3,583 per day) passed through the portable speed sign zone.

55,736 or 14.5% of all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted speed limit. Of the vehicles speeding, 85% were travelling at or below 57km/h. When prompted, speeding drivers did not reduce their speed. This indicates very clearly drivers are speeding in Clara St and not voluntarily slowing down.

Please slow down around busy school and pedestrian hot spots!
